This is pretty neat! Luggage with a scale built right in!

Solutions 25" Expandable Suiter Pullman Suitcase from Ricardo Beverly Hills.  This is part of the Solutions collection which includes a larger version with a built in scale. The scale will allows you to "weigh-and-go" and avoid airline overweight penalties. (Be sure to check with your airline before you travel. Many have cut the free baggage weight allowance from 70 pounds to 50 pounds.) This is a well thought out luggage system. You can customize the suitcase for business or pleasure with any of the twelve compartments, pockets and removable packing accessories. Available in Crushed Berry, Maui Teal and Black

Durable 1682 and 2520 denier ballistic nylon.  By the way, the built in scale can be set to displays pounds or kilograms. And if you forget to shut it off, don’t worry. It will automatically shut off after 15 seconds  Another nice feature are TSA combination locks. Expands 3" if you need more room.  Overall dimensions: 25" H x 18" W x 8" D. Leo loved this suitcase so much he actually bought one online while I was telling him about it. List price is $200 or more, but Leo did a web search and found it for about $120. Good to Go in 150 Countries.

This is a neat idea from Kensington. I want to give Kensington a good plug, because they’ve provided us a “good plug”!  It’s Kensington's Travel Plug Adapter with USB Charger. It looks like a standard small power converter, but it’s a lot more. There is a series of slider buttons you push to extend various prongs that adapts the plug so it works in over 150 countries. Merely plug your small electronic device into the standard A/C on the other end of the device. But wait, there’s more! In addition to a cap that allows you to swap one country's A/C plugs for another's you can plug in an adapter that gives you a standard female USB port from whatever country’s power the device works in. So Instead of a carrying a bunch of adapters this device does it all. Use the USB charger for your PDA, phone, iPod and other gizmos. That means you can leave that many AC adaptors at home. There’s a list of countries the Kensington Travel Plug works in at their website. Price: $29.99  / And they offer the same plug without USB adapter $19.99

The Panasonic Super Disc Camera.

The Super Disc camera from Panasonic --- an amazing camera, with some pluses and some minuses. On the plus side, 8 years ago everyone was longing for more storage in a digital camera. The Panasonic Super Disc recorded images directly onto – what else? A super disc! That meant 120 MB of storage!  1.3 MEGAPIXEL max resolution. That also meant a camera that weighed over a pound and a half! A camera that could be put in your pocket, only if you were a Kangaroo. And the price? MSRP $999.00. It actually sold for a couple of hundred dollars less, but don’t forget eight years the buck was worth more than it is now. It could also be used as a another drive, a super disc drive on your computer. You composed the shots on a 2.5 inches LCD Screen. There was no optical viewfinder and no optical zoom --- and no onboard memory. But it did include a 120 MB Super Disk.  If you shot photos at the maximum available resolution it would still hold 450 images. At the lowest quality 1500 photos.

Here’s something you’ve been waiting for. Outlets to go.  From Monster Cable.

If you’re a gadget freak and you travel, there’s something you need but can’t bring with you – AC outlets! At the hotel you usually find one or two, but that’s not enough. Monster Cable comes to the rescue with Outlets To Go. Depending on the model, Outlets to Go will provide a place to plug in up to four or six devices. A nice feature is that it prevents overloads with a built in circuit breaker. With its flat wire and flat plug design Outlets to Go are compact and lightweight. Frequent travelers can also use this at the airport where all the gadget lovers are seen gathered around the few available AC outlets. A lot of thought went into this unit. The space-saving outlets have a dual-side layout with wide spaces to accommodate bulky transformer plugs. And a feature I really like is that the plug has a built in indicator so you tell if the outlet you plugged into is powered. Depending on the model the price ranges from $25 to $30 but if you do a web search you can find the 4 plug version for under $20.

The integrated 802.11g wireless interface is perfect for those who want to access their media wherever they go, including surfing the Web2, sending and receiving email from Web-based mail applications, and connecting the device to a home network to transfer files or play content directly from the network. Black & Decker Snake Light

I was a big fan of the original Snake Light, a flashlight with a flexible neck so you could twist it around pipes, railings or even your own neck to aim the light wherever you needed it.  It was like having someone hold a flashlight for you. Well there’s a new Snake Light on the market, a brand new LED version. This one has 17 LED’s!   14 of them come on in the Work Light position. And 3 LED's come on in the Flashlight position, both selectable via a 3-way switch. Black and Decker says the 14 LED work light provides up to 5 hours of continuous runtime on the 2 C batteries which are included.  The 3 LED hand-held flashlight has about 64 hours of runtime with the 2 C batteries. There are other options too. You can disconnect the light unit and the battery pack from the flexible neck to make a handheld flashlight or worklight. Under $30 at Home Depot

The Daily GizWiz, Weeks of April 16 -  Monday April 16th, Netcast #291  New York Auto Show

Hmmm…what to buy at the auto show. The Chevy Aveo that retails for just about $10,000 or Bugatti Veyron for a cool 1.5 million dollars. It does have 1001 hp and it can go a touch over 251 mph, but that a good car for city driving and street parking? Lots of cars that run on ethanol, rocket fuel, maple syrup, and diet coke and Menthos.
Okay, I didn’t buy a new car, but I was very interested in seeing the Smart Design prototype taxi that premiered at the Taxi 07 Exhibit. It’s the 100th anniversary of the modern day taxi. Design Trust for Public Space put on a special exhibit. Tim Kennedy director of Industrial Design from Smart Design gave me a tour of the prototype he worked on. It was a specially redesigned Kia Rondo Sport Utility. Here are some the highlights of the look-ahead design. Custom clear L shaped partition for driver safety; maximizes passenger space. Integrated child booster seat; and easy to find seatbelts. Improved lighting and mirrors so traffic and cyclists can be seen before opening the door. Lighted door knobs so you can find them in the dark, even a light on the open door so that cyclists can see it is open. Then there's an all-accessible elevator seat to bring taxi travel to everyone, regardless of age or ability. A clear, simple communication via an updated rooftop light by Antenna Design. Lets you display your destination and if you're willing to share your ride. Hopefully one day we'll see these advancements in cabs on the street!.

Now back to more normal gadgets ------ Oh wait a minute, it's Turn The Table Tuesday!

Turn the Table Tuesday, April 17th, Netcast 292

After Leo picked the toothpick Bird as his “Turn The Table Tuesday” anything was an “up”. But surprise, this week’s Turn The Table was actually interesting.
The Sony eBook.

Here's some info on the eBook from the Sony Style website:

The Portable Reader offers a new and convenient digital reading experience. It boasts an amazing screen with technology that rivals text on paper. Weighing less than 9 ounces and only ½" thin, it's more compact than many paperbacks. Plus, it comes with a soft, black cover and software that seamlessly allows you to search and browse thousands of electronic book titles from the Connect eBookstore and then easily transfer from your PC to your Sony Reader. With built-in memory and multi-format support, you can take many of your favorite titles and documents with you. So compact and convenient, you'll want to take it everywhere.

Leo took advantage of a special offer: $50 towards many top best-sellers, classics and more! That helps a bit because the eBook is $349.99.

Bose has come up with a new concept in headphones. They don’t go over the ears, or way into the ears. These new headphones sit in the outer bowl of the ear. They incorporate the famous Bose TriPort acoustic headphone structure which offers a greater low-frequency output from a small headphone. They're designed to remain comfortable in your ears with soft silicone tips shaped to rest gently in the outer bowl of your ear (just outside the ear canal). It sounds complicated, but it's not. I was able to use them with ease and I'm not a doctor!  Removable Small, Medium and Large tips are included so you can adjust the size for a more accurate fit. Typical of making things easy, the washable tips are color coded so you can distinguish them quickly. Experiment because you may find using a different size tip for each ear is more comfortable. Bose in-ear headphones are engineered specifically for portable audio devices like MP3 players, and CD and DVD players. They don't block out all the outside sounds, so they're safer for street wear. And they come with a high tech black small carrying case that protects the headphones when not in use. That sleek case also helps keep the cables organized and tangle free. If you're not sure they're for you, no problem. You can try them for yourself with the Bose in-ear headphones 30 day trial run. No, you don't have to leave them in your ears for 30 days!  But they're Bose, so you know they'll sound great. $99.

Current Owners of the Bose Headphones: Here's the toll-free number from the Bose press release. 1-800-819-7032.. There are 2 upgrades coming. New lock-on silicone tips which should be ready now, and an around the neck clip on to help hold the ear buds on when you're doing more strenuous exercises while wearing them. That upgrade is going to be available in June. Both upgrades I was told, are free to current Bose headset owners.

The Super Disk

The LS120, or SuperDisk, is a drive which supports a special floppy diskette which can store up to 120MB of information as well as being backwards compatible and still supporting the standard 1.44MB floppy diskettes. For a while there was a double density SuperDisk also known as the LS 240. This disk storage technology was developed by Imation Corporation that made both drives and the high-density diskettes. A SuperDisk diskette could have 2,490 tracks, as opposed to the 160 tracks that conventional 3.5-inch 1.44 MB diskettes use. This higher density translates into 120 MB capacity per diskette. The drive was available in internal, and external configurations with USB, parallel port, and SCSI interfaces.
It became available starting about 1997. The Internal SuperDisk drive  was about $99, a parallel version, (later changed to USB) laws $169  A SuperDisk drive was used in a Panasonic digital camera, the PV-SD4090, which allowed it to use both SuperDisk (LS120) and 3.5" floppy disks as the memory media. That’s going to be ‘gadget warehouse Friday’ pick in the future.

Ribbed rubber footings on both ends of the ramp provide stability. The ramp rolls into cylinder form for compact storage at home or while traveling in the car. Every ramp comes with a washable nylon storage bag and an Instruction brochure for proper use of the ramp, and for training a dog to walk up and down the ramp with confidence.

Back to the Warehouse Friday, April 13th!

A Security Phone System that Seems to Have Disappeared from the Market Place.

The TA2000 Security Alarm
Telephone alerts family, friends or neighbors who can contact help in a fire, medical or intruder emergency. When the alarm on a TelAlert smoke detector, motion detector or a key chain is activated, it sends a radio frequency signal to the TA2000 Phone, which in turn begins calling a series of nine pre-programmed phone numbers of friends, neighbors or family members. Once the call is received, the ISD1420 chip inside the phone plays a pre-recorded message corresponding to the emergency such as "There's a fire in the house! Call the fire department!" The person receiving the call can then activate a 2-way speakerphone to ensure the call is not a false alarm, or can immediately contact the appropriate help. $249.99 included a Telephone Security Base, Wireless Motion Detector and two Key Chain Remotes. Additional add-on accessories such as a Medical Alert Button, Smoke Detector and Door/Window Contacts were also available. But no longer.

How many picks can a woodpecker peck?

This is Leo’s incredible find! Toothpick Bird and Toothpicks.  (Yes he IS scrapping the bottom of the barrel!)

The year is 1958, and this attractive woodpecker waits for your decision to have a toothpick. It stands ready right next to the stainless steel cocktail shaker. You press the bird's head down and it grabs a toothpick with a single perfect peck. Toothpick in hand, you stab the olive in your martini and bring it to your mouth. You pre-date James Bond and you swing, baby. Later, Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack come by. They all take a toothpick and the mood is licentious. You may be reprobates, but you are so charming with your toothpicks. The 3" tall black plastic woodpecker with googly eyes stands atop a 2" hollow base, which stores toothpicks. Includes 250 custom-made round wooden toothpicks with one pointed end and a delicately carved handle end.

$6.95 ea.

Recording on Your Nano, on the Run

Turn your iPod nano 2nd generation into a portable, pocket-sized recording studio. No tapes, no batteries, no cables. MicroMemo plugs into your iPod to record interviews, meetings, lectures, or any audio content directly to your iPod nano.   Capture audio using the flexible, detachable mic—or another type of microphone with a 3.5mm-plug, like our MemoMic lapel microphone or a stereo or condenser mic. MicroMemo also records directly from a computer or soundboard via line-in capabilities. Recording time is displayed on your iPod nano screen in real-time, and the built-in speaker allows you to listen to your recordings instantly—without earbuds. (From my experience the sound from the built in speaker is very low, but you can use it to confirm your recorded material.) If you want to connect a headphone it goes into the mic port.  Managing recordings is easy: your recordings are saved as files that import into iTunes at CD-quality. From there, you can edit the audio in programs like Garage Band, or import as a soundtrack to a home movie, slideshow or presentation. MicroMemo records in 2 different quality levels: Low (default) and High. You change the setting at Extras>VoiceMemos>Quality. Under $60.

Recording Capacity (2GB iPod nano) 12 Hours 3 Hours

Recording Capacity (4GB iPod nano) 25 Hours 6 Hours

Recording Capacity (8GB iPod nano) 51 Hours 12 Hours

*All times are approximate. Individual results may vary.

All memo files are saved in WAV format.

BACK TO THE WAREHOUSE FRIDAY.

Cook Food That Both YOU and Your Dog Can Eat!

WILD ABOUT DOGS 1.    This was number one of a what was going to be a series of videos about dog care.  Even though it’s not a gadget I’m made it a gadget warehouse Friday pick because of its relevance. On the video there are several recipes of things you can make for your dog that you can eat too. With the ever expanding pet food recalls, people might want to know about making dog food at home.  Today this video is no where to be found, or even a mention of it on the web. However, if you do a search for Serafin Boitel, the producer and the chef shown in the video, some of his recipes are available on line. I’m sure that they must be other recipes available on line for those who wish to prepare food for their pets.
