It's a Gas!

From time to time on the Daily Giz Wiz Leo and I have talked about "It's a Gas", a song released (or escaped) from MAD Magazine. Years ago when MAD bound those floppy plastic disc in MAD Specials, they often had songs of them. And those MAD floppy discs had NOTHING to do with the computer type.

Daily Giz Wiz listener James Baldwin found a recording of IT'S A GAS on YouTube, and emailed it to me. So if you've never heard it, or heard and and didn't believe it - and want to hear it again - Here's your chance!

Mad About MAD

David Hajdu, author of the book The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic-Book Scare and How It Changed America, pays homage to the “usual gang of idiots” behind Mad magazine. Here, vanityfair.com presents six decades’ worth of classic covers, selected by Hajdu and the “idiots” themselves.

For the latest Madness, visit the
DC Comics Web site.

See a history of some of most popular MAD, the comic, covers here:

Thanks, Vanity Fair!

MAD, the comic. Issue #1
A Daily Giz Wiz Listener finds another bit of MAD history on YouTube.

I just stumbled upon this on YouTube and was curious if you had any part in this animated pilot.  It looks like it could have been a great, funny show.

Thanks, Gordon!!!   -  Dick De

Look what someone posted on YouTube!

William M. Gaines, Dick De, Nick Meglin, & John Ficarra on Sixty Minutes! (with Morley Safer)

It's was back in the late 1980's when the 60 Minutes crew came to our office for days on end to video tape the UGOI in action.  Double click the arrow on the left to start the video.

GO "BACKSTAGE" AT

MAD MAGAZINE!

Here's Part 1 or a 345,587 part "Backstage at MAD Magazine Tour"

A rare look at our NY offices at 1700 Broadway, New York City.

Well it may not be rare to you, but it's rare for any of the UGOI (Usual Gang of Idiots) to see the inside of the MAD offices!

For years I looked for this clip of William M. Gaines, founder/publisher of MAD Magazine,
appearing on To Tell The Truth!

Thanks to Adam of www.gameshowutopia.net fame for finding it!

It's from 1970, 39 years ago!  Adam's a big game show fan and has posted some great stuff on You Tube.

Back then  I worked on To Tell The Truth (while writing The Match Game) and finally convinced Gaines to be on the program. He did great as you'll see. Be sure to watch the "mill around" at the end of the show. You'll see Dick De without a stache!

In the clip you'll see a celebrity panel including two game show legends, Bill Cullen & Gene Rayburn, cross-examining the founder & publisher of MAD Magazine. Dick DeBartolo, who was collecting paychecks from both Gaines and Goodson-Todman at this point, pops up during the credits.

Another find from YouTube.

Barry Mitchell, from World News Now fame comes up to visit MAD Magazine. Dick DeBartolo, MAD's Maddest Writer and Barry also stop people on the street to talk about MAD Magazine.

And here are some Giz Wiz Videos!

The Lab With Leo

The Giz Wiz travel to Vancouver with a gaggle of gadgets.

Click on the "play" arrow left. Before the video starts there's a G4 commercial. Yes in Canada G4 lives with Leo Laporte!  (But that's soon to change unfortunately.)

Dick DeBartolo, The Giz Wiz, visits the QM2.

That's the amazing Queen Mary 2!

Click on the link on the right.

(It's a six minute video, so you'll have time to make two 3 minute eggs!)

On the Left: From our friends at Perpetual Kid the Fred 500 XL Really Big Sound Speakers!

Several Daily Giz Wiz listeners asked if I had heard these speakers or even seen them in person. Our friends at www.perpetualkid.com sent me a pair to play with. They're desktop speakers designed to look exactly like a pair of iPod earbuds - except they are 500 times bigger! The sound is not "knock out" quality, but it's impressive for their size and their price. And people will freak out when they see them on your desk! The amplifier can be powered by USB (cord included) or battery. I recorded a video so you can see them for yourself. Click on link on the right.

They'll be the subject of an upcoming Daily Giz Wiz Netcast. Cost is about $50.

Attention Train Fans!

What a great gadget!

The Lionel Crossing Gate Coin Bank complete with flashing lights and sound effects!

I found it on the HSN - The Home Shopping Network - for about $25.  A real bargain to my mind.

See it in action.  Double click the start arrow.

Here's another clip I found on YouTube.

The Giz Wiz with Back to School Gadgets.

When I was a kid, going back to school meant "did I want the black loose leaf cover, or the blue one!" The only electronic was a battery operated pencil sharpener and that was a technical marvel!

Here's a really fun piece of software!

It's from CyberLink and it's called YouCam.  It lets you add special effects to your webcam videos in seconds.  See the mini demo I made.  Just double click the "start" arrow.
